yesterday was an overall triumphant day:

after 7ish hours spent in the digital design lab, i was able to fulfill all of this project's requirements
my debouncing switch circuit wasn't working, so i successfully implemented it in software instead
also, i pulled a fast one on my TA. my subtractor only worked properly when Cin was high. (it was counting down by 2 instead of 1, cuz i forgot to convert the first of two terms into 2s-complement). instead of going back and implementing a subtractor, i simply removed the inverter on my active-low Cin pushbutton so that it was constantly providing an input and made it look like the subtractor was working
huzzah!

was able to complete a modeling and simulation project (event-driven relay race) in much less time than was anticipated
nice when you finally overcome what originally seemed like an opaque and inpenetrable subject
